Red Riding Trilogy, UK (2009)
The first film, 1974, is the best in the series. It's creepy, beautifully shot, very atmospheric and with good story about young journalist that finds himself going against powerful people in attempt to reveal police conspiracy and some facts about the crimes.
The second film is a mess, with incoherent and boring story about some cop that investigates the events of the first film. Worth seeing just to keep with the story, but it's really a bad one, although it's camouflaged pretty good.
The last film that concludes the events of the first two films starts really good, with deeper look into the corrupted police team, and great editing that mixes between the past and the present. But as it goes towards the end, it creates huge plot holes, becoming sentimental and very confusing.

Twisted and psychotic thriller with great story. The movie is a bit strange and unusual in the way the story unfolds, the characters are complicated and mysterious. And the result is something more than just a typical formula thriller.
The movie is not fast and there isn't much action, but it's quite tense and keeps the interest up till the end. It also requires a little thinking too, so this is definitely not a mindless entertainment.

Very well done movie. The idea of voyeurism gets here original and creepy new look. Great story about how easy a person can be manipulated and terrorized in his own home without being aware of it.

Unusual and minimalistic crime thriller. One of those independent and low budget productions that pulls a lot of attention and praises, and the first time director is skyrocketed to the fame and success. And apparently for a reason.
Starts slow and enigmatic and right after that creates tense mystery that unfolds into jaw dropping situation. It's a rare pleasure to watch such extreme movie. Better not to watch trailer or read anything about it before, because it reveals part of the mystery and it's not fun. Hollywood's remake for 2010 is already in progress with many top actors and same director.

Misdirection, deception and cunning happens not only between the characters in the film, but also toward the viewer. There is no point in the movie when you can tell if what happens is the truth or just another scam.
The movie is always one step ahead of the viewer, but the ending, with all the twists and misleading, is not solved properly.

In my opinion it is the best Kitano movie he made, and I've seen them all. Not only by the structure of the narrative, but also by the level of imagination he is able to reach. His visual style explodes here with originality and daring.
Extra violent, perversive, stylish and also very funny, this visual achievement is stunning.
