Slumdog Millionaire, UK (2008)

Picture
[Some spoilers ahead.]

I really should've known better. When the movie is winning so many prizes, including 8 Oscars, something ain't right. On the other hand, how after all that hype and noise it is possible to approach this film with normal expectations?

Slumdog Millionaire is done very well and feels like a dream, blurring time and space. Danny Boyle is true professional, one of the rare filmmakers that knows how to create a proper mise-en-scene, how to tell a story and how to emotionally manipulate the viewer according to his intentions. And while the production is really superb, the weakest part of the film is the direction of the story.

Big part of the film is truly pleasant experience, going very smooth and intriguing. It's funny, it's touching, it's involving and the plot structure of the movie, told as a memory flashbacks, creates sense of purpose, sense of direction.
But once it gets closer to the end, the movie becomes more and more incoherent and even ridiculous. The romantic theme, which is the main theme that holds the entire story together and establishing the motives behind the character's actions, expires as soon as they become adults, starting from the first meeting between Jamal and Latika in her house, when she is married to the crime boss. The movie insists to continue in its previous way, when it's very obvious it cannot go there. "Run away with me" and "We will live from love" is mostly embarrassing and silly than romantic.
After this the movie reaches a crossroad, and for the first time since the beginning chooses wrong direction. The film suddenly not convincing anymore, everything that happens right after feels like a fake. And why exactly Latika is so passive? This submissiveness of hers truly bothered me, I don't know if this is some cultural differences, but her character was insulting to me. And she didn't even know the answer, which makes her also completely useless.

Danny Boyle is known for positive endings to his movies. Even if things are really screwed up in the end, Boyle always manages to leave huge sense of optimism in the viewer. Whether it's Trainspotting, 28 Days Later or Sunshine, in the end it's always positive feeling. I guess this time he just went too far.
The over the top and extreme happy ending maybe something that can be seen in Bollywood movies a lot, and I think this is what Boyle was trying to recreate. But when something so extreme can work for some people, it cannot work on a cynic person, like myself.
Suddenly the ending reflects differently on entire film, the journey is judged by the final destination, and after seeing the place this movie went to, I can only be very disappointed.

In the end Slumdog is just another over-hyped movie, that people prefer to overlook its flaws. Constructed from two parts, only one really holds - the story of their childhood. Well made, but not great movie, and contains many problems.

Zift, Bulgaria (2008)

Picture
European arthouse film with all the related meanings.
I personally interpreted Zift as political allegory, when the author is looking at the past and trying to analyze it from the current viewpoint of wisdom, after many years have passed. Such retrospective is usually full with life lessons and moral tales.
The story occurs between 40's and 60's in totalitarian Bulgaria, which actually is a puppet of Soviet Russia, and it's about cold and harsh reality, filled with betrayal and dishonest people.
The main hero is looking for a humane side of such society, I might say he is looking for love in more general sense, as a concept.
Interesting and symbolic movie, beautifully shot on black and white film, with many surreal characters and small crime plot.
Zift looks like a Film School graduation project, but nevertheless it is recommended for everyone that seeks small arthouse pictures with meaning and depth.

The Wackness   (2008)

The Wackness, USA (2008)

Without sounding like a cliche, this is one of the best movies of 2008 that you haven't seen. Great soundtrack, acting and the dialogs. This film is unusual "coming of age" story with extreme description of some miserable and fucked up characters. It's all very sad and funny at the same time, the movie is emotionally involving and very impressive.
Not boring at all, and people who can watch interesting drama with meaningful content will really enjoy it.
Despite being very bleak and a little depressing, this movie is also very optimistic, sort of bitter-sweet.
Excellent and memorable watching experience.

The Baader Meinhof Complex, Germany/France/Czech Republic (2008)

Picture
Political movie about real life extreme left wing terrorist group Red Army Faction (RAF) and their violent wave of terrorist actions across Europe in '70s.

The film is interesting to watch, the production is big and expensive, but as any pretentious movie that trying to dramatize real life controversial story into fiction, it has also many problems.
It's hard to review cinematic values of such film, there are not many of them. The storytelling is not linear, the movie is mostly fragments and pieces of events, many characters are introduced without proper treatment, the movie jumps between places and times, all in order to cover the whole story. The movie is also too long.
The only proper review is from political standpoint, analyzing the content rather than anything else.

This is not something I want to do here, but I have to say this - all that RAF group were kind of douchebags, and the only reason they started all their ideological bullshit is because it was the only way for them to become rock stars, get attention and get laid. And all their sympathizers and imitators are just bored kids that had no reality shows on TV, no video games to play and no BlackBerry to text all their friends.

Truly, all technological achievements in last decades and emphasized mass entertainment took the revolutionary gene away from bored young people, that after first visit in political science class and reading first chapter of Marxist theory suddenly develop political conscience and think they are new Mao Zedong or something.
Now, when the only purpose in life is to tweet and blog, or to go to college parties with free spirited girls, no one has any urge to make any revolutions. The nihilism and conformity have finally won.

Let the right one in   (2008)

Original Title: Lat den ratte komma in, Sweden (2008)

Slow and mysterious film with some scary scenes, but this movie is more of a drama about unusual relationships than horror. Although there is blood and murders, this is more about emotional attachment and the cruelty of the world. As for cinematic standards, this movie was done extremely well in every aspect of production.

Synecdoche, New York, USA (2008)

Picture
Directional debut of Charlie Kaufman, that before this mainly wrote scripts, including Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and more. He continues with his themes and style in this movie too, and it is both good and bad.

Kaufman's scripts are familiar for containing autobiographical elements, his characters are very much part of himself, like his embodiments. They are expressing his emotions and thoughts, their experiences, in a way, are his own.

And in this film, again, he presents his vision of reality in very direct and honest way, it's amazing how he can displays his deep emotional and mental state in series of images, how he manages to let viewers enter his mind and look around, how he creates very unique mood right from the start, and how he is not ashamed to show his most lowest and embarrassing moments. The acting is great and the characters are complex, the film flows through twisted story with touches of fantasy and surrealism, using satire and cynicism in creative way.
As director, Kaufman skilfully plays with cinematic conventions, distorting the sense of time and reality, there are many impressive moments on all levels, the general idea of the movie is really smart.

But, and here comes the bad part, at some point all this becomes very, very tiresome and even annoying. I mean, the movie holds up for more than a half of its time, during which Kaufman successfully manages to slide on the edge between interesting and original to boring and bland. But in last quarter he can no longer keep the balance and falls down, into the abyss of banal and cheap. The film suddenly becomes too heavy, too sentimental, too pretentious. It's all just keeps dragging on and on, becomes even more depressing, slower and over the top allegorical.

By now, after so many scripts, in which he cried and wept about his miserable life, inventing one fucked up character after another, you would think Kaufman will change the phase, that he will grow up a little and his writing will include something beyond the regular content of his meetings with the shrink. But no, he still continues to cry and weep, displaying nothing but annoying self pity and being sentimental wuss.
Ok, Charlie, we get it. Problems of life, fear and inevitability of death, relationships, human nature, pain, sorrow, blah, blah, blah.

Move the fuck on.

Choke   (2008)

Choke, USA (2008)

Based on the book by the same author that wrote Fight Club and has similar themes of misanthropy, desperation, psychosis, but also ultimate salvation. There is a big difference between the movies, and first time director of Choke is the reason this movie is lacking creative imagination and just telling the story.
The content is as expected - disturbing, vulgar and deprave, moving between outrageous comedy to tearful drama. The result is quite shocking, but entertaining enough to watch and enjoy.

Original Title: Tres dias, Spain (2008)

In three days a huge meteorite will hit the Earth and destroy all life on it... What do you do? That's right, you are trying to solve psychological traumas from your childhood.

Although this movie is quite good, something about it just doesn't feel right. Nothing specific to put my finger on, mostly accumulation of the small things, but somehow this movie can be annoying and irritating, and at the same time interesting and well made. Only for people that watch strange European movies from time to time.

Original Title: Gommora, Italy (2008)

Strange crime movie with multiple stories and semi-realistic visual style. The Escapist, UK/Ireland (2008)

Picture
Without revealing too much about the story, it's another prison escape movie with rather original plot structure, mixing the escape with the events that lead to it. Great acting and some interesting elements cannot cover the bitter and complete disappointment from the ending. Truly, I felt like I was cheated in very brutal way. Similar disappointment I've experienced from watching High Tension.

This is why I rate it low, but I still recommend it, because I can see that many people may not react in such way as me.

Diary of a Nymphomaniac, Spain (2008)

Picture

Stupid film that only possible to watch due to the excessive nudity and many sex scenes in it. While this movie is trying to say something about current condition of modern woman in this liberal world, especially about her sexuality, good intentions aside, this film is incredibly dumb and laughable melodrama. And don't be fooled by the poster, all the sex and moaning is getting tiresome after 20 minutes, and the movie has nothing else to present, except the stupidity and embarrassing naivety of the heroine.

Ex Drummer, Belgium (2007)

European cinema at its best. Anarchistic dark comedy displaying the ugly side of reality with no limits of good taste or morality. Very sick and at the same time it's humorous, in a disturbing kind of way, with very explicit scenes of rape, abuse and murder.

The Debt   (2007)

Original Title: Ha-Hov,  Israel (2007)

Israeli secret agents are hunting one of the remaining Nazis, but after they have him, things are getting more and more complicated.
This is quite good drama/thriller exploring some sensitive topics. There is a complex emotional background behind this movie, and the filmmakers are not afraid to dig deep.
The movie is mostly drama, but the acting is good and the story is interesting and tense. Some parts of the plot are ridiculous and a little laughable - these secret agents are nothing like James Bond, for example, so it doesn't fit the expectations from the spy movie. But when taken in proper context and after some deeper analyzing, it seems reasonable enough.
Knowing Israeli cinema, this is one of the better results from there.

Frozen Days (Yamim Kfuim), Israel (2005)

Picture
I could label this movie as a bad rip-off of Polanski's The Tenant, but I guess there is more to it. The movie is very experimental and enigmatic, officially it's been branded as "psychological thriller", but I think it's not entirely true. This movie is rather political statement about the state of individual and about human existence in the current Israel, country that is always under a threat.

Anyway, this movie more suitable to be a 20 minutes short film, because this is all its potential can actually hold. Awful dialogs most of the film, long and boring scenes that suppose to create the mood, but most of them really unnecessary. The movie takes off a little towards the end and the actual ending is good, but it's not worth to suffer 60-70 minutes before that.

This is example of the dialog, when the actress is talking on the cell phone: "Hello? Where are you? Hello? I can't hear you. Hello? I am going out, hello? Are you there? Hello?"

I mean, come on! And it's like that for 5 minutes. Not the only example for terrible conversations, the little strength this film has is in its visuals, not dialogs, not characters and not even weird story.

I can also compare between this film and 13 Tzameti, which is similar in spirit and because both were done with very low budget. And when 13 Tzameti is very thoughtful story, painfully rational and meticulous, holding the attention from the start to finish and very suspenseful, Frozen Days is mostly unfocused and amateurish, with very few strong points, mostly boring and fails to create big interest, just a little bit.

The creator of this film may claim that this alienation and the bland feeling of the movie is intentional and suitable for the clean and simple aesthetics (the movie is called Frozen Days after all), but it's bullshit. The days when director didn't want to involve the viewers are long gone, and Danny Lerner is certainly not Michelangelo Antonioni, not even close.

If anything, this movie, despite many praises it received, is a perfect example of Israeli cinema - existing in its own bubble and completely disconnected from the rest of the world.

Down by Law, USA (1986)

Great music and mood in cult classic by Jarmusch. Low budget comedy about three totally different men caught in the nightmare of Life. Great performance by Benigni steals the show, but the movie is not for everyone.
